Resumo

A problematização da consciência possui o escopo de explicá-la, de compreendê-la, e de esclarecer suas relações com o mundo (material). A neurociência vem contribuindo fortemente para desvendar os processos cerebrais, e, com isso, fornecido suporte no estudo da consciência. Contudo, as perguntas vão além da fisiologia do cérebro (e sistema nervoso), cogitando sobre presença de relações de causa e efeito nesse funcionamento e no tocante à própria consciência. Afirmações a favor do determinismo acabam por afrontar a liberdade. Dada a incompatibilidade clássica entre esses termos, os questionamentos passam a ser sobre a possibilidade de harmonizá-los, bem como sobre as razões das ações humanas e a responsabilização das condutas.

The problematization of consciousness has the scope to explain it, understand it, and to clarify its relationship with the (material) world. Neuroscience has contributed greatly to unraveling the brain processes, and thereby provided support for the study of consciousness. However, the questions go beyond the physiology of the brain (and of the nervous system), speculating about the existence of cause-effect relationships in this operation and in relation to consciousness itself. Arguments in favor of determinism eventually confront freedom. Given the mismatch between these classical terms, the questions turn to the possibility of harmonizing them, as well as about the reasons of human actions and the legal responsibility of human behavior.
