Abstract

This paper presents an unprecedented
translation from Spanish to Portuguese
of the work of Argentine jurist Mateo
Goldstein, “Derecho hebreo: a través de la
Bíblia y el Talmud”. The focus, for technical
adequacy, lies within the field of Succession
Law, considering its historical and cultural
contextualization. The methodology
employed is based on Skopos Theory, with a
greater concern for the text’s function rather
than literal, word-for-word translation. The
thematic choice is justified by the interest
in understanding the foundations that have
influenced and continue to influence the
development of law in the West, yet mindful
of the current and controversial crisis in the
Middle East. The text also underscores the
influence of ancient religious discussions on
contemporary legal systems, aiming to promote
the understanding that, beyond highlighting
differences that may lead to conflicts, there is
an urgent need to value the similarities that
unite societies throughout history, fostering
more harmonious dialogues. In this sense,
the presentation in the Portuguese language
not only contributes to the dissemination
of legal-historical knowledge but also to
a greater cultural understanding, enabling
future reflections on the principles of justice
and human rights.
