Abstract

This paper adopts an analytical-descriptive
approach to explore how the principle of
secularism influences the protection of rights
for the LGBTQIAPN+ community. The
study proposes a critical analysis of how the
separation between State and religion can
strengthen the principles of equality, respect
for diversity, and individual rights. From the
historical influence of the Catholic Church in
Brazilian politics to the enactment of the 1891
Constitution, which officially established the
separation between State and church, the text
reflects on the contemporary challenges of
maintaining a secular state in a plural society.
The relevance of secularism is highlighted not
only as a mechanism of state neutrality but
as an essential resource for promoting a truly
inclusive and just society for all, including
the LGBTQIAPN+ community. The article
concludes by emphasizing the need for
proactive secularism that embraces diversity
and ensures the fundamental rights of all
citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation
or gender identity.
